Hi, my name is Isabel Caballero. I am the Founder of Care & Cure Foundation. In order to understand Care and Cure, you have to know a little bit about my background. My grandmother, Shanette Edler, was the co-owner for Liuzza’s Restaurant and Bar, a famous neighborhood restaurant in mid-city New Orleans. She started teaching me about the restaurant business when I was seven years old. She would take me to Liuzza’s all of the time. I would stamp the checkbooks while she took care of the financial work. Every now and then she would let me help her count the money. When I was eight, she would let me bus tables as well. I learned a lot about business. My dad is also in the restaurant business. He is now the Director of Operations for Walk-On’s Enterprises. I learned a lot about business from him as well.
Unfortunately during all of this, my meme (Shanette Edler) was suffering from lung cancer. She had gotten diagnosed with it seven years prior to 2011. She also had suffered from double breast cancer in her earlier years. If you looked at her in 2010 you would never guess that she was working off of only one lung. Then reality hit and before I knew it, she passed away on February 12, 2011. It was tough and just when I thought things couldn’t get worst, my dog passed away June 17, 2011 from leukemia. Then more losses came with cancer and the losses began to take a major toll in my life.
Sometime in March of 2012, the idea of Care & Cure struck me. My meme and I always discussed how amazing it would be if someone would start a foundation that would put a major emphasis on general cancer awareness and market it with a twist to really bring people in. I decided to take the knowledge I had gained about business and use it to promote Care & Cure Foundation, a non-profit organization that strives to inspire those affected by cancer in any way to come together as a community and choose colorful for the cure. I designed multicolored silicone bracelets and blue and gold bags to sell and raise money. After going through an array of research centers to donate to, it was decided that the Louisiana Cancer Research Center would be the best decision.
The foundation was not as easily created as said; in fact, Care & Cure could be a lot bigger than what it is now. However, as a junior in high school, it is not always easy to sell or promote a foundation and have adults take you seriously (no offense to the adults that are reading this, but it is the truth). I could not tell you how the name Care & Cure came into mind, but I can sure tell you what it means. If we care about those around us and we care about putting in everything we can into helping fund cancer research, we will find the cure. Does that mean the cure to cancer? Who knows? What it does mean, however, is that by being a part of this community, we can cure those who are suffering from the disease, suffering a loss, or even suffering from a lack of knowledge on this rising epidemic. Care & Cure is not just about raising money, in fact, that is one of the last things on the agenda. Care & Cure is about supporting one another as a community, be it helping you find another trust worthy foundation that focuses on a specific branch of cancer, giving speeches to your community regarding the prevalence and seriousness of the disease, and even coming together at fundraisers to spread the word about every cancer and cancer ribbon out there who has fighters that deserve praise. As a high school student, yes, it is very difficult to get my point across, but that is why I am reaching out to you. So you can choose colorful for the cure. And yes, even though Care & Cure does not focus solely on raising money, we really do need as many sponsors and donators as we can get and we need to spread the word. So, with all of that being said, if you would like to be apart in this cause, please email me at [email protected] or submit a form on our “Be A Part of the Team” tab on the website. Thank you for taking the time to read this, and always remember to Choose Colorful!
Sincerely,
Isabel Caballero
